Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) is an early 20th century politician, communism ideologist, founder of the USSR and the subject of many jokes. He is known around the world and was born in Simbirsk, which was renamed after him in 1924.

How is it possible to talk about our location and not mention the Volga river? It is the most well-known river in Russia and the longest in Europe, flowing 3500 km into the Caspian Sea.

For many centuries, the Volga has served as a vital transportation route crossing the biggest European part of Russia. Its non-official name, "Volga Tsarina", translated as Queen Volga, is an appropriate nickname given its historical and modern importance.

It is a big city about 900 km east from Moscow. Ulyanovsk is situated on one of the widest and most beautiful banks along the Volga. It was founded as a fortress, called "Sinbirsk" (later Simbirsk), by Governor Bogdan Khitrovo in 1648.

Since its founding more than 360 years ago, Ulyanovsk has had a relatively calm history, though it's been the birthplace to many historical personalities who have left their footprints on Russian and international culture, such as novelist Ivan Goncharov and historian Nikolay Karamzin. But the most well-known son of Ulyanovsk is Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), the communist leader. The city was renamed after him in 1924.

Today's Ulyanovsk is growing, yet it remains a cozy city with scenic views and lots of historial monuments from different eras.
